In building a sustainable business with the potential to achieve substantial profitability, we focus on finding business opportunities in the biopharmaceutical market where uncertainty and risk is traditionally very high but offers the greatest potential rewards in the biotechnology industry. We focus specifically on the production of human therapeutic proteins and we have identified a significant market gap for production/synthesis of a complex protein candidate. We have a competitive edge over current production systems with regards to safety, complexity, cost and scalability, by using synthetic biology and advanced genetic engineering techniques in plant systems.
Our business model fits into the early phase of the drug discovery process and we believe that an exit strategy after pre-clinical (animal) trials will allow for generating a significant ROI in a relative short period (3 to 5 years).
We have received private funding as well as seed-capital from the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) of South Africa. That funding is running out end of June. We have made considerable progress (reaching experimental milestones) and we are currently seeking investment for a period of 3 years. The funds will be used for:
• finalizing Proof-of-Concept (isolation and purification of biopharmaceutical compound in plants)
• pilot-scale production and purification and peptide characterization
• IP-management
• Commercialization prior to pre-clinical trials
Partnership with strategic business- and IP-management consultants has significantly strengthened our position for successful implementation of the proposed business model.
